The UCR Basic Needs Working Group is a multidisciplinary team aimed at addressing issues of food security, homelessness, accessibility, transportation, financial literacy, mental health and wellness. The group was founded in 2015 as the Food Security Working Group via the Global Food Initiative, and has evolved to support other emergent concerns and shift toward a comprehensive basic needs framework.
While much of the group’s initial focus was to provide emergency relief and crisis intervention for student food insecurity via R’Pantry, we also direct our work at the root of these issues through a systems approach, engaging students, staff, administrators, faculty, and community members and agencies. Our efforts include data collection, promotion of and access to robust resources and services, linkage to off-campus resources and programs, and policy analysis.
While the general working group meets quarterly, there are several subcommittees committed to the planning, implementation and evaluation of various aspects of Basic Needs initiatives, including:
- Education and Outreach
- Data and Reporting
- R’Pantry Management and Operations
- EBT/ Cal Fresh (SNAP) Support
- Devon Sakamoto, Director of The WELL, firstname.lastname@example.org
- Karen McComb, Senior Director of Health & Wellness, email@example.com
